La rib remodeling It is a body contouring surgery designed to modify the shape of the lower ribs to achieve a narrower waist and a more defined transition between the chest, waist, and hips.
At Cirumed Clinic, the focus is on remodel and preserve the coastal structure instead of removing ribs. The technique is planned individually according to the anatomy, tissue quality, and goals of each patient.
In this guide we explain what rib remodeling is, who can be a candidate, how it is performed, what the recovery is like, what results can be expected and why our team prefers remodeling over rib removal.
Rib remodeling: key facts
Define waist and ribcage contour.
General.
Progressive and guided.
Corset/girdle as indicated.
What is rib remodeling?
Rib remodeling modifies the curvature of the lower ribs to visually reduce the waistline. The technique used by Cirumed focuses on the outer layer of bone and the floating ribs are remodeled inwards, without removing the rib cage.
The goal is not simply to "remove ribs," but to change the architecture of the lower contour of the thorax in a controlled manner while maintaining the protective structure.
It can be performed in isolation or integrated into a broader body contouring plan, for example along with buttock augmentation (BBL) or advanced techniques such as Supercharged BBL.
What can a rib remodeling achieve?
Define a narrower waist
Modifying the rib contour can help reduce the straight or square appearance of the waist and create a more defined transition between the chest and hips.
Improve body proportions
The visual benefit depends on the complete anatomy. Therefore, the planning must consider the waist, ribs, localized fat, hips, and buttocks as a single aesthetic unit.
To complement body contouring surgery
In certain patients, it can be combined with liposuction or other procedures to enhance waist definition, provided the combination is safe and appropriate for the case.
Who can be a candidate?
Rib remodeling may be considered in patients in good general health who have a wide lower rib cage or prominent ribs and desire a more defined waist.
The indication depends on anatomy, bone quality, respiratory status, medical history, and expectations. Not all patients need rib surgery to achieve a narrower waist.
When might it not be indicated?
It should be studied with special caution in people with relevant lung diseases, coagulation or healing disorders, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or expectations that cannot be safely met.
How is rib remodeling performed?
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Through planned incisions, the surgeon accesses the lower ribs and reshapes their curvature according to the individual's anatomy.
In the approach described by Dr. Alexander Aslani, work is done on the outer bark The floating ribs are carefully folded inwards. The rib cage is not removed, and plates, screws, or wires are not routinely used in this technique.
At the end, the incisions are closed and a compression protocol is established to help maintain the new position during the initial consolidation phase.
How much does a rib remodeling cost?
The price depends on the complexity of the anatomy, the technique required, and whether it is combined with other body contouring procedures.

Rib remodeling before and after
The goal is to achieve a more defined waist and a more harmonious relationship between the ribcage, waist, and hips. The final result depends on the initial anatomy and the procedures combined.
The photographs and videos should be considered as examples of real cases; they do not guarantee an identical result in other patients.
Recovery and postoperative care
First days
Inflammation, discomfort, and a feeling of tightness are expected at the beginning. Pain management and progressive mobilization are tailored to each patient's progress.
Compression
Wearing a corset or compression garment is part of the postoperative protocol. Its duration and fit should follow the medical team's instructions.
Physical activity
Activity is gradually restored. Strenuous exercise and significant exertion should be postponed until the surgeon confirms that recovery allows for their resumption.
Final result
The result continues to evolve over the following months as the swelling decreases and the new contour stabilizes.
Rib remodeling vs. rib removal: why we remodel
There are two surgical approaches to reducing the waist at the rib level: reshape the ribs o remove some of themAt Cirumed we routinely perform rib remodeling, but we have not adopted rib removal as our preferred technique.
The reason is simple: our clinical experience favors preserving the protective structure of the rib cage whenever we can achieve an effective waist reduction by reshaping the ribs.
What does rib remodeling actually do?
In rib remodeling, work is done only on the outer layer of the bone, and the floating ribs are carefully folded inwards to define the waist. Ribs are not removed and the protective rib cage remains intact.
In our unpublished clinical experience, remodeling alone can produce on average an approximate reduction of 10% of the preoperative waist circumference, measured approximately two fingers above the navel and not including the effect of associated liposuction.
Why we prefer to remodel
In our experience, rib reshaping is less invasive than rib removal, preserves the protection of internal organs, and allows for a more predictable recovery. Furthermore, it does not require plates, screws, wires, or other metallic materials that could cause future problems.
For our team, keeping the rib cage intact while achieving a more defined waist offers a more favorable balance between outcome and surgical aggressiveness.
Limitations: explaining them is also part of a good indication
The main disadvantage of remodeling compared to extraction is that there is a small risk of the ribs partially returning to their original position. In our unpublished clinical experience, a small amount of this can occur. recoil during the first weeks or months.
A setback of around 1–2 cm During the first six weeks to three months of brace use, the expected outcome may occur. Adherence to the compression protocol is important to maintain the results.
Rib removal may be less dependent on this cooperation and yield a few extra centimeters, but, in our assessment, that potential advantage does not outweigh the greater surgical trauma.
Risks and considerations
Like any surgery, rib remodeling can be associated with pain, inflammation, bruising, temporary changes in sensation, asymmetries, healing problems, or infection.
Preoperative assessment, surgical technique, and follow-up are essential. The procedure should be performed by a surgeon with specific experience in body contouring and chest wall anatomy.
FAQ
What is the difference between rib remodeling and rib removal?
Rib remodeling involves reshaping the floating ribs and folding them inward without removing them. Rib removal physically removes part of the rib structure. Rib removal can add a few centimeters, but it is more invasive.
How much can the waist be reduced with rib reshaping?
In our unpublished clinical experience, the average reduction achieved through body contouring alone is approximately 10% of the preoperative waist circumference. Individual results vary and may be greater when combined with liposuction.
Can ribs move again after remodeling?
There is a small risk of partial regression. In our experience, a change of around 1–2 cm during the first six weeks to three months can be part of the normal progression. The compression protocol is important to maintain the new position.
Is rib remodeling safer than rib removal?
There is no one-size-fits-all solution for every patient. In our experience, remodeling is less traumatic because it preserves the rib cage, does not remove a protective layer, and does not require metal hardware. For these reasons, it is the technique we prefer at Cirumed.
Does rib remodeling leave visible scars?
The incisions are planned to be as discreet as possible. Their final appearance depends on the technique used and individual healing.
When can I return to the gym?
The return to exercise is gradual and must be authorized by the medical team based on your progress. Intense exercises require more time than light daily activities.
