The Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure

A Brazilian butt lift, also known as a gluteoplasty, is an incredibly popular buttock augmentation procedure. This procedure has two parts — liposuction and fat grafting. The BBL surgeon uses liposuction to harvest excess fat cells from the donor site, such as the abdomen or thighs. The fat cells are then purified and injected into targeted areas in the buttocks. This procedure enhances the shape of the buttocks, making them look fuller and more aesthetic.

The Brazilian butt lift surgery is incredibly popular because it’s performed using natural fat cells. The BBL surgeon harvests excess fat cells from the donor site, thus sculpting and contouring another part of your body. After liposuction, the BBL surgeon injects fat cells drawn from your body into targeted areas of the buttocks. Since this procedure relies exclusively on autologous fat cells, there are no risks of infections, allergies, or rejection.

Below, we describe what you can expect from the BBL procedure on the day of the surgery.

Before the BBL Procedure

When you arrive at the plastic surgery center, you will be asked to fill out some forms and sign a consent form. You will be asked to change into a hospital gown and take off all body jewelry. You will also have to take off all makeup. The medical provider will ask if you’ve followed the BBL surgeon’s preparation guidelines, such as not using any skin products, avoiding showering, and not eating or drinking anything since midnight.

The BBL surgeon will review the details of your BBL procedure. Even though you would have already gone over the details during the initial consultation, the surgeon will review the details again. The surgeon will also mark the targeted areas for harvesting excess fat cells and the fat grafting injection sites. The most common donor sites include the lower back, tummy, thighs, and hips. After marking the treatment areas, your BBL surgery can begin.

During the BBL Procedure

During the BBL procedure, you will be placed on a surgical table and connected to monitors that identify your blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels. The medical provider will administer general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. General anesthesia puts you to sleep, and local anesthesia with IV sedation ensures you don’t feel any pain or anxiety. Your BBL surgeon will select the ideal anesthesia depending on your needs.

 Liposuction

Once the anesthesia takes effect, the surgeon marks the donor sites. The BBL surgeon makes small incisions on the donor sites and injects a solution made of lidocaine and epinephrine (tumescent anesthesia) to ensure comfort and minimal bleeding. The BBL surgeon inserts a special hollow tube, known as a cannula, and moves it back and forth to suction away excess fat cells from the donor site. The fat cells are stored in an airtight container.

Fat Grafting

After harvesting excess fat cells from all the donor sites, the BBL surgeon purifies the fat cells to remove all the blood, fluid, debris, and dead cells. After purifying the fat cells, the BBL surgeon carefully injects them into the targeted areas of your buttocks using a cannula. The BBL surgeon will use a back-and-forth motion to insert the fat cells to break up and move past the bands of tissues on the surface. The amount of fat cells injected will depend on your goals.

 After the BBL Procedure

If you received general anesthesia, you would wake up in a recovery room feeling groggy and tired. If you receive intravenous sedation, you will feel more alert after the procedure. You will experience soreness and discomfort around the incision sides, for which your BBL surgeon will offer pain medications. You will have to wear a compression garment after the procedure to reduce swelling. Your BBL surgeon will also offer detailed instructions on what you can or can’t do to ensure optimal recovery.

After your BBL surgery, you must not sit down or lie on your buttocks for a few weeks. Your follow-up session will be scheduled a few weeks after your surgery to remove the sutures. You can expect bruising and swelling around the treatment areas, but you must inform your BBL surgeon if you notice redness and warmth around the incision sites because they may indicate an infection. You can resume light activities after a week, but you must take at least two weeks off work.

The Butt Lift Surgery FAQs

How is the procedure performed?

The BBL procedure includes two primary steps — liposuction and fat grafting. The BBL surgeon inserts a cannula into the targeted donor sites to suction away excess fat cells, following which the fat cells are purified and injected into targeted areas on the buttocks.

How will my body look after the procedure?

After your BBL procedure, your body will look more contoured. Your donor sites will look slimmer and more contoured, and your buttocks will look fuller and tighter. The final results of your BBL surgery will be visible after the healing period is over, usually after 6 months.

Will I need touch-up procedures in the future?

The BBL procedure offers permanent results. Some of the fat cells in your buttocks will be reabsorbed by your body, but your buttocks will look fuller and more shapely. However, if you’re dissatisfied with the results and want greater enhancement, you can discuss the possibility of touch-up procedures after the complete healing process.

Is a Brazilian butt lift safe?

A Brazilian butt lift is perfectly safe because it’s performed using your body’s natural fat cells. The BBL surgeon doesn’t place foreign objects in your body, so the risk of infections, allergies, or rejections is negligible. However, all surgeries involve an inherent risk of infections, which you should be aware of.
